Fleda BrownFleda Brown, former poet laureate of Delaware, visited Mount Pleasant as part of the Wellspring Literary series in March, 2018. Brown has received numerous awards for her work, including the University of Wisconsin’s Felix Pollak Prize for her book Reunion (2007). The Woods Are On Fire: New and Selected Poems (2017) is the most recent of the more than a dozen books of poetry, essays, and memoirs that she has authored or edited. Brown was an English Professor at the University of Delaware From 1978 until 2007, when she retired and moved to Michigan. Charlie BriceRecently, as part of the Wellspring Literary series, poet Charlie Brice visited Mt. Pleasant and gave a reading. He is the author of Flashcuts Out of Chaos, and his poems have appeared in numerous publications. Keep an eye out for his upcoming book, Mnemosyne’s Hand. Tommye BlountOn October 2, 2017, as part of the Wellspring Literary Series, Tommye Blount visited Mount Pleasant. Kevin Thomas recently had the privilege of discussing with Blount his poetry via email. Blount is the author of a chapbook of poems called What Are We Not For, has received a 2017 Kresge Artist Literary Fellowship, and is working on a full-length poetry collection that will be published in 2020. His work has appeared in several journals, including: The New England Review, Poetry, The Poetry Review, Ninth Letter, The Kenyon Review, and Third Coast.

Foster NeillOn April 10th, at the final installment of the 2016-2017 Wellspring Literary Series, more than a dozen poets gathered in Mount Pleasant for The Michigan Poetry Celebration. This event, hosted to celebrate The Michigan Poet Anthology, brought together a number Michiganian poets published in the Anthology to read their work.
The Michigan Poet, founded in 2010 by Foster Neill, aims to bring the work of local Michigan poets to the attention of their community, for, as their website states “The Michigan Poet believes art enriches our lives, and fosters positive, creative, and unique identities that are essential to the success of any community.” The Michigan Poet believes in the literary value of our state, and through the release of broadsides displayed in local businesses, schools, and other organizations, brings this art culture to the attention of the community. Sandra BeasleyOn Thursday, October 6th, 2016, Sandra Beasley came to perform her poetry and nonfiction as part of Central Michigan University’s Visiting Writers Series. Earlier that day, Zachary Riddle and Regan Schaeffer had the opportunity to meet with Sandra to talk about her writing. Sandra has authored three full-length books of poetry, including Theories of Falling, I Was the Jukebox, and Count the Waves. Sandra’s poetry has also appeared in several anthologies, including the forthcoming anthology The Golden Shovel (University of Arkansas Press).
